There is something extra special about shooting maternity portraits for a woman who’s wedding you were lucky enough to photograph. Jen was just rounding the corner out of her first trimester when I photographed her wedding in the summer. Getting to photograph her towards the end of her third trimester, and then getting to photograph her newborn daughter, was really wonderful.

When I first started doing photography I shot lots and lots and lots of film (mostly Ilford 400) and spent lots and lots of lots of time in the darkroom. These are some scans of film images of families I’ve taken over the years… some of them are from my first few rolls of film! They certainly don’t have the sharp, polished edge that digital photography provides, but I love them for their grainy, earthy, raw quality and the memories they captured.

This family photography session with the Haynie family was the fifth time I’d photographed them. Katie, her husband Eric, and their three beautiful, energetic children one of my favorite families to photograph. The kids always look darling, are very polite, and always manage to get into a little monkey business. For this session we met at a big outdoor space for a walk through the fields and a little hot chocolate picnic to celebrate the coming of autumn. The afternoon light was beautiful and we had so much fun.

I photographed Silvia on a day in mid-fall when she was just at the start of her third trimester. We met at her house and after photographing her indoors for a little while we ventured out into the fields for some outdoor maternity pictures. I loved taking photos of her growing belly and radiant smile outside. She was glowing, lovely, and so excited about the impending arrival of her daughter.

The Getchis’s are some of my favorite people on Earth. I love any chance I get to take their photos. One year, Kate’s mom bought a family session for them so, while I often snap photos of their son Waylon while he plays with my kids, we had never set out to do a proper family session. We walked around their neighborhood taking pictures before Kate’s sister and her family joined us for even more pictures!
